This is a volume of S. Orgelbranda Encyklopedja powszechna z ilustracjami i mapami (Orgelbrand's Universal Encyclopedia, with Illustrations and Maps), a Polish general encyclopedia published in Warsaw by the firm of S. Orgelbrand's Sons in eighteen volumes between 1898 and 1912. It continues the work of the Warsaw publisher Samuel Orgelbrand (1810-1868), whose 28-volume Encyklopedja powszechna of 1859-1868 was the first large modern encyclopedia in the Polish language. Arranged alphabetically, its articles cover history, geography, the sciences, the arts, religion and biography, with particular attention to Polish people, places and culture, and they are illustrated with drawings, maps and plates. Written in the Polish spelling of the period, the encyclopedia offers a detailed picture of what an educated reader in partitioned Poland knew about the world at the turn of the twentieth century.
